The project will involve widening and upgrading the current path to improve the safety of all users, and the accessibility of this popular path.
These are high demand corridors that connect major destinations.
Primary routes are vital to many types of bike riding: medium or long-distance commuting, recreational, training and tourism trips.
A shared path is a combined walk and cycle way used together by these two modes of active transport. Separated paths are ones that are either designated specifically for pedestrians or cyclists. A shared zone is a low speed area used by both pedestrians and cyclist which normally exist through highly pedestrianized places.
Where safe and feasible, the Shared Path will be created by widening the existing footpath along the foreshore, avoiding a duplication of pathways that would increase future capital renewal and maintenance costs.
Widening the existing footpath can generally be accommodated with minimal impact on the surrounding green infrastructure and parking provision
The section of Marine Parade between Forrest Street and Napier Street falls within the Marine Parade Foreshore Masterplan scope, and will become a shared zone when the Masterplan is delivered.
The Federal Government is funding approximately $4.2 Million and the Town is responsible for the remaining $200,000 of the total cost.
